BPAA International Regional Roadshow Focuses on the Applications of Typical Scenarios

On June 16, the First Screening on Best Practices of Applied Algorithms (BPAA) Regional Roadshow, hosted by the Office of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference Organizing Committee, was successfully held online. As the last regional roadshow of BPAA, best practices projects of applied algorithms from North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and other international regions were presented to the eye of the public.

This international regional roadshow was hosted by Huang Huiyan, Founder & CEO of Guangzhou Morningsun Technology Co., Ltd. and Executive Vice President of the Association of Chinese Computer Scientists in Germany. Shen Hao, Chief Scientist, Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor of the Big Data Center of the State Key Laboratory of Communication University of China, Wang Haofen, one of the founders of OPENKG, a Chinese knowledge graph consortium, Distinguished Researcher and Ph.D. Supervisor of Tongji University, Ye Cong, an AI technology expert from Tencent, and Yuan Yue, Chairman of Dataway, were present at the event as expert judges.

Team members of the international projects came from universities, research institutes and enterprises in more than ten countries and regions, such as the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, China, India, Israel, Kazakhstan, and Morocco, etc. The algorithm projects were carried out with the focus on core technology directions of machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, artificial neural network and algorithm-based intelligent hardware and robotics, etc., covering application areas of smart education, financial investment, intelligent security, predictive maintenance, disease screening and diagnosis, intelligent writing and grammar correction, among other segment scenarios. The expert judges believed that the projects for the regional roadshow had been based on real-life problems, which addressed real needs and provided practical solutions for real scenarios, reflecting the value of algorithms. The algorithm projects were highly creative, executable and scalable, with considerable promise for further exploration and implementation. In addition, compared with the more ambitious and broad propositions in China, overseas projects focused more on various typical areas of APPs and special scenario applications, with a certain level of significance in promoting the development of the algorithm industry in their respective regions.

At the same time, in the comprehensive review session, the expert judges also suggested that, first of all, they hoped that in the future roadshows of the projects for the competition, the contestants could present the key components of their algorithms in a more concrete and detailed way, and spend more energy on elaborating on the source of the idea, core technology and construction method of the algorithms. Also, they hoped that the contestants, during the roadshow, would introduce the application effectiveness of the algorithm projects more precisely, especially the provision of data to prove the effectiveness of the algorithms, so that the judges could truly understand the actual applications of the algorithm projects, and compare the advantages and disadvantages of one algorithm with different projects and other competitors, which would help the judges to give a fair and objective judgment on the roadshow projects, and also enable the audience present to better understand what algorithms were, the mechanism of algorithms and how algorithms could be used to achieve goals.

BPAA takes "promoting the industrialization of algorithms" as its central goal. In the trio of artificial intelligence, i.e. arithmetic (data), arithmetic power and algorithms, the industrialization of arithmetic and arithmetic power has been fruitful, while algorithms as behind-the-scenes tools are relatively attached with less attention. Algorithms provide a new option for problem-solving, and compared to existing traditional solutions, algorithms can help companies improve their efficiency and allow industries to reshape their thinking and reconfigure their workflow in a unique way. Understanding the full picture of algorithms helps the public to understand the core elements of the AI industry.

With the successful conclusion of the First Screening on Best Practices of Applied Algorithms (BPAA) International Regional Roadshow, the BPAA regional roadshows in the Greater Bay Area, the Yangtze River Delta, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Central and Western China, as well as North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific have all been completed, and the panel of expert judges will then conduct an integrated assessment according to the global ranking of each racetrack (public algorithm track, financial algorithm track, medical algorithm track, industrial algorithm track, and business algorithm track) based on the results of each regional roadshow. The top 10 projects from each track will be honored as BPAA Global Top 50 and appear again in the next stage of the competition roadshow.
