ZHAOWEI Tilting & Rotating Central Control Screen Explores New Forms of Intelligent Cockpit

With the development of automotive intelligence and vehicle networking, the automotive central control screen is gradually becoming the intelligent cockpit hardware device with the highest penetration rate. Data shows that the market size of automotive central control screen will reach US$32 billion in 2022, accounting for about 70% of the global intelligent cockpit market size. The ever-growing market of the automotive central control screen attracts major car manufacturers and component suppliers to launch differentiated competition through R&D investment and product innovation, thus driving the functions of automotive central control screen developing towards diversification, intelligence and integration, and the forms of the screen evolving towards large screen and multi-screen.

With a penetration rate of 90.9%, the automotive central control screen, which has basically become a standard configuration of contemporary new models. However, due to the limitations of screen technology in the past time, most cars did not initially have a central control screen. It was not until Mercedes-Benz, a pioneer in the automotive industry, installed a high-resolution LCD screen into the central console that the central control screen gradually became popular in luxury cars. Even so, the entertainment equipment available were basic, including a music player, CD player, car navigation, etc. which is quite boring and uninteresting in the present view.

Today, with the improvement of chip performance, the operator interface and application logic of electronic devices such as smartphones and computers are gradually being extended to car systems. Various entertainment applications on mobile phones and computers can also be implemented on the car, and the central control screen also starts to carry the core functions of the intelligent cockpit, integrating a number of functions including autonomous navigation, audio-visual entertainment and reverse images under the Internet of Vehicles ecosystem, which effectively improve the driving experience.

Compared to the ever-enriching features, the development of the central control screen is not so satisfying: the rectangular screen is often horizontally placed above or below the air conditioning outlet with a combination of screen and physical buttons. What really set off the screen controversy was a 17-inch, large-size central control screen that caused an uproar in the automotive industry. This screen not only changed the traditional horizontal layout of the central console into a vertical layout, but also integrated multiple functions such as music, navigation, air conditioning, sunroof, suspension and driving mode controls. Since then, automotive manufactures have been scrambling to imitate and launching large vertical central control screens. And for a while, disputes over the horizontal screen and vertical screen forms were raging.

The emergence of disputes is reasonable. So far, the interior design of a car has become a systematic project and the layout of the central screen should not only have a sense of technology, but also consider the ergonomics. Automotive manufactures that do not agree with the layout of vertical screen believe that from an ergonomic point of view, the design of horizontal screen is more in line with human's visual habits, while those who do not agree with the layout of the horizontal screen think that the vertical screen is more technological. Under the controversy, some automotive manufactures have proposed a compromise solution, that is, the tilting & rotating central control screen

Nowadays, more and more mobile phone applications can be used in the car. And the adaptability of the applications and the system interface has become one of the considerations in the design of a central control console. The tilting & rotating central control screen can make a rotation of 90° according to the application scenario and interaction mode of the vehicle software, allowing the car owners to choose horizontal or vertical screens according to their operating habits when using a mobile phone. On the other hand, smart cars are now developing towards the concept of "the third space" and taking the functional need of the co-driver into account. With the tilting & rotating central control screen, the co-driver can control the direction of the screen and experience the entertainment functions better.

However, from the perspective of practical application, there are still some shortcomings in the current tilting & rotating central control screen, such as the stability of the motor which drives the movement of the screen. It is said that ZHAOWEI who is deeply committed to the field of micro drive, has launched a tilting & rotating central control screen solution which can be customized according to the automotive model and screen size together with some car companies. The solution adopts a combination of DC motors, parallel transmission and worm gears to improve the deceleration force. Thus, the motors can smoothly and quietly drive the screen to complete the tilt and rotation, providing car owners with a better experience of using the tilting & rotating central control screen.

With the rapid development of intelligent cockpit and vehicle networking, cars are no longer a simple means of transportation for consumers. They are changing from car-centered travel tool to human-centered "the third space". The emergence of the tilting & rotating central control screen is an innovative exploration of human-computer interaction. It is believed that in the future, car manufacturers will continue to work hard for a better travel experience for people.
